Designing Working Rooms Versus Living Rooms

Before passing to the other rooms of the house, we will pause to consider a more purely utilitarian group.

The Kitchen

These rooms which are strictly utilitarian, more or less escape decorative control. The kitchen, aside from the elements of proportion in arrangement of its furnishings, is not properly a room for decoration. A cheerful color, plenty of light--a practical essential--and practical arrangement  of its furniture and equipment are of more importance than the decorative element. Neatness, color harmony and a restful eye effect should be obtained. This applies as well to the butler's pantry. Pantry and kitchen should always be shut off from the dining room, so that the latter's decorative values are not affected by them.

The kitchen is purely a room that can be a design in it's own fashion of what you feel is comfortable to eat and cook in. Cooking is a chore and working in a kitchen that you feel a pleasure to be in will help this chore to be more pleasant. Don't forget that many conversations are in the kitchen when coffee is drank amongst friends. Every party people seem to venture and stay in the kitchen, partly because that is where most of the food is, the other part is it seem to be the most quiet and the brightest areas during entertaining. Having the kitchen brightly and tastefully decorated with pottery and such will spark conversation as well as making the room more pleasant than to just cook and eat in.

The Bathroom

Tiled or hardwood flooring, painted or glazed washable walls, sanitary plumbing,  glass shelves, washable cotton rugs and bath mats, all the modern conveniences in keeping with the purposes of the room, thrust the decorative element into the background. The curtains must be simple and quite easily washed.

Simply put the bathroom furnishing need to be able to be cleaned and sanitized. The decorations in there should be easy on the eye and easy to clean. Tiles can be the main attraction on the bathroom for color and decorative purposes. Any pictures or wall hangings should be able to with stand dampness and cleaning.

The Craft Room or Sewing Room

The home sewing room, too, may be viewed decoratively as well as practically. A sunny room with western exposure, kalsomined in pale warm gray, the floor covered with cream- colored matting, windows fitted with white Holland shades--a combination restful to the eye--and furnished with hard-wood framed, cane-bottomed chairs.

Craft and sewing rooms are rooms that can be cluttered easily and if lightly decorated for quick cleaning is really the best way to go. Of course if the room stays cluttered the best thing to do is to shut the door from the rest of the house as clutter will get into the way of the decoration and design of the rest of the house.
